Retina Injection (Intravitreal Injection)
Retina injections, also known as intravitreal injections, are commonly used to treat various retinal conditions affecting vision. In this procedure, a small amount of medicine is injected directly into the vitreous cavity of the eye using a very fine needle.
These injections are most often used for conditions such as:
- Diabetic macular edema (DME)
- Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
- Retinal vein occlusion (RVO)
- Macular swelling and inflammation
The medications include anti-VEGF drugs (to reduce abnormal blood vessel growth and leakage) and steroids (to control inflammation).
The procedure is:
- Quick and nearly painless (performed under topical anesthesia)
- Done as an outpatient/daycare treatment
- Takes only a few minutes
Multiple injections may be required over time depending on the condition. Retina injections are highly effective in stabilizing vision and, in many cases, improving eyesight, especially when started early.
