Retina Surgery (Vitreo-Retinal Surgery)
Retina surgery refers to specialized procedures performed to treat disorders of the retina—the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye responsible for vision. These surgeries are commonly done to manage conditions such as retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, and vitreous hemorrhage.
The most common procedure is vitrectomy, where the surgeon removes the vitreous gel from the eye and repairs the retina using advanced microsurgical techniques. Depending on the condition, the retina may be stabilized using laser, gas, or silicone oil.
Retina surgery is usually performed under local or regional anesthesia as a daycare or short-stay procedure. With modern technology, it is safe and highly effective, although visual recovery may take time depending on the severity of the condition.
Early diagnosis and timely surgery are crucial to preserve and improve vision.
